Job Summary:
The Treatment Foster Care Child and Family Therapist provides intervention and treatment to children, adolescents, and their families based on the family needs and strengths. These services include but is not limited to crisis management, assessments, psycho-educational groups; individual therapy, and family therapy as needed.
Core Competencies:
- Knowledge of various modes of psychotherapy and evidenced-based practices, especially crisis intervention and short-term models using individual, group and familial approaches.
- Skill in assessment procedures, diagnostic evaluation, therapeutic treatment, and case management practices including follow-up and closure.
- Ability to establish therapeutic alliance with patients and their families.
- Ability to work effectively on a multi-disciplinary team and with the public.
- Assesses and incorporates culture into assessment and treatment processes.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Actively seek feedback and supervision, and engage in personal reflection and self-correction
- Acknowledges impact of own feelings and cultural values on practice
- Knowledge of ethical principles and state laws
- Knowledge of and adheres to state reporting and regulatory guidelines
- Maintains appropriate boundaries with patients
- Assesses for trauma and engages in trauma informed practices
- Formulates realistic, patient centered treatment goals and evaluate progress towards goals
- Knowledge of developmental needs of population served
Job Requirements:
- A graduate degree from an accredited college or university program in the following fields: social work, clinical psychology, family studies, marriage and family therapy, guidance and counseling or another human-services related field.
- Must maintain a clean driving record, valid driver’s license, and current car insurance. Must submit to LCDF required background check, TB screen and drug testing.
- Training:
- (a) Participate in knowledge/skill based pre-service training relevant to the services provided including:
- (i) child and adolescent development;
- (ii) prevention and de-escalation of aggressive behavior and the use of therapeutic holds;
- (iii) crisis management, and intervention;
- (viii) actions and potential side-effects of medications;
- (ix) certification in emergency first aid and CPR; and
- (x) behavior management.
- b) Professional staff who can provide verifiable documentation of previous training in one or more of the above areas are not required to repeat the training if the staff and the clinical supervisor agree in writing as to which specific training is equivalent and therefore not required. This exception does not apply to training regarding an agency’s policies and procedures.
- (c) All professional staff attends annual, ongoing professional development/ training relevant to the agency’s treatment foster care model and to their individual job responsibilities.
- (iv) grief and loss issues for patient(s) in foster care;
- (v) cultural competence and knowledge of the means for obtaining and providing culturally responsive services;
- (vi) specific agency policies and procedures including documentation;
- (vii) recognition of abuse/neglect symptoms and state abuse/neglect/exploitation reporting requirements
